Traction Control should basically enable effective vehicle propulsion with good stability particularly on slippery road surfaces. Ideally the system should have the ability to transmit optimum torque to the driven wheels. One solution is to brake individual wheels in order to achieve the best tractive effort by compensating for the normal torque sharing action of a standard differential. This method requires the level of precision found in an anti-lock braking system which also has the ability to distribute brake pressure amongst the wheels as reuired. This paper discusses how a braking system incorporating anti-lock can be adapted to operate in traction mode.
