High performance, cost competitive materials are becoming of increasing interest in the automotive industry. Customer expectations for reliable and environmentally friendly vehicles paralleled with stringent government regulations for fuel economy and safety have driven the demand for stronger, light weight, recyclable materials. The use of aluminum metal matrix composites (Al-MMC) is an effective solution to help meet the forementioned requirements. Typical sand-casting techniques have been shown to be inappropriate in pouring particulate reinforced aluminum metal matrix composite (Al-MMC) castings. New gating/risering configurations were necessary to produce castings of acceptable soundness. Several automotive components, including brake rotors, cylinder liners and camshaft thrust plates, were prepared using special techniques. Initial durability test results of several AL-MMC prototpye components are presented.
