The performance of a disc brake system is studied through use of a twelve degree of freedom lumped parameter model. Eigenvalues and eigenvectors are used to define the system stability and mode shapes. A formal eigenvalue sensitivity analysis is employed to investigate the small perturbation behaviour in detail. A squeal type instability is studied and a number of dsign improvements, aimed at reducing the squeal propensity are investigated. The sensitivity coefficients provide important design information in a way which is easily understood by the engineer. The resulting design methodology is demonstrated to provide an efficient means of improving the performance of the system.
