A new approach to adaptive control of active suspension for nonlinear time varying (NTV) vehicle plant is discussed. A robust stable adaptive controller with time varying parameters is designed for control of active suspension of a vehicle-plant to obtain optimal performance. The controller gains are updated by an adaption algorihtm based on model reference adaptive control (MRAC) to cope with the actual time varying vehicle-plant. An optimal performance between the good vibration isolation and stability and curving is achieved by following a reference optimal model. Adaptive control of a single-wheel-station active suspension is considered. An error augmentation approach of MRAC is utilized to show how optimal perfornance of active suspension can be obtained without a priori knowledge complete plant dynamics. Computer simulation results are presented in support of the approach.
