The development of fiber optic sensors for measurement of many chemical and physical properties has provided the opportunity for instrumenting aircraft and spacecraft with lightweight, unobtrusive sensing elements which are immune to electromagnetic interference. Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of critical parts can be a continuous process with sensors monitoring the health of a structure in a manner analogous to a nervous system in living organisms. Smart structure concepts are being investigated for health monitoring of future aircraft and space platforms. Sensor systems must be developed for assessing impact damage, the effects of corrosion and atomic oxygen, and the integrity of power systems, storage tanks, pressure vessels and structural elements. The research and development efforts at NASA Langley Research Center for implementating health monitoring systems on future vehicles are presented.
