A generalized vehicle model is derived for use in the simulation of vehicle ride for optimisation of vehicle ride performance under both stay-state and tasnsient conditions. This model allows for independent inputs at all four wheels as well as allowing for linear and non-linear elements in the suspension. The ride performance under steady-state conditions is assessed in terms of the ride discomfort parameter which is the weighted root-mean-square of the body acceleration. Under transient conditions, (i.e. traversing obstructions) the ride performance is assessed in terms of the vibration dose resulting from traversing the obstruction. Some results are presented showing the dependence of vehicle ride performance on the characteristics of various elements of the vehicle suspension and how the best combination of these may be obtained in a practical situation. The simulation model is validated using data obtained from actual vehicle tests.
