The longitudinal traction performance of various all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicle configurations is studied using two analytical models. These models are specially structured to allow the quasi-static and dynamic analyses of various driveline configurations that include any number of torque split mechanisms, such as open and locked differentials, viscous differentials, and interaxle coupling systems. The quasi-static analysis model is used to quantify and optimize the longitudinal performance potential of various AWD configurations. The dynamic analysis model captures the vehicle and powertrain dynamics and has been validated experimentally. The simulated results agree well with test data taken under straight-line acceleration maneuvers. This model is used to develop an understanding of the torque flow dynamics in various AWD systems.
