Semi-active suspension for ground vehicles were conceived in th eearly 1970's in a conceptually complete form. In contrast to fully active systems, semi-active is economical, safe, and requires no more power than a heedlight. Initially, however, appropriate valve hardware and low-costs senosrs were not available, so engineers sought to simplify the original concept. The extreme case in simplicity is best described as adaptive rather than semi-active. Much work today continues in this area to develop various heuristic algorithms. Yet, the performance of the next level of complexcity, on/off semi-active, far surpasses adaptive methods. Further system sophistication results in even better performance as demonstrated by the variable on/off and continuous semi-active concepts. As valve hardware, microprocessors, and micro-machined accelerometers become economical, these systems will be commonly found on cars and trucks resulting in better ride and handling. This paper attempts to present the development of the semi-active suspension from a conceptual, theoretical, and design standpoint. The evolution, as presented here, is largely based on published papers and patents.
