Rattling noise in automotive transmissions is caused by unloaded gears and synchronizing parts vibrating within their functional backlash. Increasing speed fluctuations of modern engines and decreasing general vehicle noise level made gear rattle to an important issue. Besides the reduction of driveline vibrations by decoupling the engine with clutch dampers etc. the transmission has to be optimized. A single degree of freedom model has been developed for the description of the rattling vibrations. The drag torque acting on a single loose gear and the coefficient of restitution modelling the impact at the tooth flanks have to be determined experimentally. The drag torque on loose gears and on synchronizing rings has been measured in transmissions with a particular method. The results of formulas for the calculation of drag torques have been compared with the experimental results. The impact of gears has been investigated on a test device. The coefficient of restitution has been identified by comparing actual and simulated rattling vibrations.
