The material mix in motor vehicles continues to change, as a variety of factors, including resource conservation and recycling, pressure the material mix of the vehicle. An initial plastics project of a broader automotive materials research programme is examining these twin environmental issues, adopting a combined product and material life-cycle approach. Evidence from our analysis of the views of North American automotive technical and material experts suggests that policy-dictated fuel conservation in the United States can be a major driver for substitution of plastics for iron and steel, but that concerns for its recycling continue to pose major barriers.
