The driveline and its operation are of overriding importance for the safety and economy of commercial vehicles. Therefore, in addition to matching the individual components to one another in the best possible way, increased importance is attached to easier operation in order to enable the driver to use the means available without being distracted from the traffic on the road. The Electronic Power Train Management is developed on the basis of the Electronic Pneumatic Gearshift installed by Mercedes-Benz as standard since 1986. The ETM consists of the higher-level control logic and electronic control units for engine, clutch, and transmission. It reduces the stress on the driver to a very large extend thus increasing road safety significantly. The ETM is incorporated in a comprehensive safety and emergency operation system which prevents safety-critical conditions from occurring and ensures maximum serviceability even if individual components fail during operation.
