The electronic control for an automotive transmission offers important advantages compared to conventional manual or electro-hydraulic controls, notably: flexibility, sophisticated strategies, comfort, repeatability. The study and development of a new electronic control transmission calls for heavy capital and technological investment. This paper illustrates a system by which a semiautomatic/automatic transmission is developed with contained investment. This system is based on a manual 5-speed + reverse transmission of standard production on which can be fitted, with minor changes, the actuators that are controlled by an electronic unit and automatically operate both clutch and transmission. The engine power output during gear shifting is controlled through adjustment of injection and/or throttle valve opening.
