In Europe nearly one hundred percent of engines for heavy duty vehicles are diesel fueled engines. The diesel engine has been proven to be the most fuel efficient engine and it is reliable and, up until recent year has been judged to be the only alternative at least for heavy trucks. The principal and serious drawbacks of the diesel fueled engine are the emissions of noise and pollutants. Many efforts have been made in order to reduce the emissions of pollutants from diesel fueled vehicles. The combustion process in the diesel engines does not allow for the utilization of the three-way catalyst technology as for gasoline fueled engines and therefore the engine manufacturers have to rely on other measures, such as improvements of the engine and oxidation catalysts or particulate traps. One measure of great importants, which must be acted upon, is the improvement of diesel fuels. Investigations carried out in Sweden have shown that the implementation of these measures have proven to be efficient ways to make the diesel fueled engine cleaner.
