Currently, vibrations of solid surfaces are often measured using accelerometers or other similar sensors which have to be attached to the structure under investigation. However, there are a large number of applications not suited to this type of investigation e.g. measurements on very small structure such as pipes or cables for which the sensor is too large, soft components such as plastic panels or covers where the sensor itself may alter the vibration amplitude and frequency, rotating systems such as prop shafts, brake discs or tyres, and extremely hot subjects such as an exhaust manifold. For this reason, laser Doppler vibrometers (LDVs) are being increasingly implemented for non-contact vibration measurements in the automotive industry. Coherent laser light is focused at a point on the test object, which, due to its movement, reflects light which has a shifted Doppler frequency. This frequency shift is analysed in the signal processor and is available as a velocity signal at the output.
