The steady increase in production line high power laser installations demonstrates the acceptance of the processes by industry and shows a growth in the maturity of the technology. At present, the main applications of high power lasers are in deep, single pass welding or high speed welding where powers in excess of 10 kW lead to efficient processes. High power lasers are also becoming established in the field of surface treatment where the rapid operation and large area coverage rates attainable allow the processes to compete effectively with conventional techniques. One of the fastest growing areas in the automotive industry where high speed, cost effective and reproducible results are of paramount importance. This paper summarises a number of relevant applications with particular emphasis on high speed welding of body and transmission components and camshaft remelting.
