CO2 industrial lasers have become important tools for the automotive production engineer to utilise to improve the efficiency and profitability of his production lines. Medium power CO2 lasers have been used for body in white cutting whilst high power lasers have been used for sub assemblies such as gearbox and transmission parts. More recently there has been a great deal of interest in replacing spot welded body assemblies with laser welded components. The stitch welds produced can greatly increases weld and component strength leading to the use of narrower flanges (and thinner gauge materials) and a consequent reduction in assembled weight. This paper describes how a high power CO2 laser with excellent mode quality can significantly improve the weld characteristics in both untreated and zinc plated car body steel. Results are presented from experiments in both Europe and Japan on the laser mode characteristics and in the weld quality produced.
