The laser is one of the key technologies in the manufacturing sector today. Its application represents a major step towards boosting productivity and reducing production costs while, at the same time, enhancing product quality. The automotive industry recognized the manufacturing potential of the laser from the onset and has become one of its major advocates. Especially in car body manufacturing, the rationalization potential of the laser, coupled with new designs and material combinations, is expected to have a great impact. In car body manufacturing, the laser was initially used for cutting formed parts in prototype and pre-series production and for cutting special contours in standard car bodies. While the laser has already become established as a standard tool in these areas, it has not yet gained general acceptance in car body welding although its advantages as a welding tool are more than evident.
