The advantages of resistance spot welding as a sheet metal joining technique are briefly reviewed and some limitations outlined. Lasers, especially CO2 but possibly Nd-YAG lasers in the future, can overcome these limitations and gain acceptance for joining autobody panels. Particular care must be given to the clamping arrangement, particularly when laser welding coated sheets. Current economic and technical considerations about laser welding in the automotive industry are discussed and some illustrations of laser applications to car body components are given. Other novel sheet joining process, in particular adhesive bonding, weld bonding and Polymer Coated Material (PCM) joining are described and their potential for autobody applications is discussed. It is explained that a successful implementation of new joining technologies necessistate a novel approach to autobody manufacture, and new design concepts.
