The tightening restrictions on vehicle exhaust emissions and the long term shortage of petroleum fuels is causing continued feasibility studies of alternative fuels. Methanol is receiving close scrutiny since it has a low carbon to hydrogen ratio which is conductive to low emissions and it can be made from coal and natural gas. These reserves are more abundant than crude oil that is used for making petroleum fuels. A fundamental problem with methanol fueled engines is poor cold startability and high formaldehyde emissions during engine warm-up. Direct injection has the potential to solve these problems. The design and development of an electronically controlled low pressure injector which provides an alternative to high pressure 'diesel' type injection is reviewed.
