Especially for space applications large mechanical plate structures of light weight are of great interest. But in general the damping of these structures is rather low. A multilayer system consisting of a CFK-plate covered with several layers of piezopolymer films serving as actuators and sensors is considered to be a favourable concept for shape control or active damping of such structures. In this contribution the results of laboratory experiments with 10 cm to 30 cm CFK-plates covered with up to 8 layers of PVDF polymers are reported. The vibrational parameters of these plates; i.e. the displacement amplitudes and phases as a function of excitation frequency, the frequencies of resonance and respective Q-values, are measured. Based on these values a digital control algorithm has been realised. The quality of the control concept is approved by the capability of the polymer actuators to damp harmonical and statistical excitations of the real flexible structure.
