Plastic and fluoropolymer materials were considered for use in fluid lines and other applications on the Space Station Freedom program due to flexibility and weight saving advantages over metals. Because of high resupply costs and optical viewing requirements, gas permeability through these materials needed to be minimized. The MDSSC chemistry laboratory performed permeation measurements on polyethylene and fluoropolymer materials with a variety of gases at temperatures and pressures specific to the needs of the program. A permeation measurement apparatus capable of accurately measuring permeation through any thickness of material with any gas at pressures from 6.9 kPa to 6,895 kPa (1-1000 psia) and temperatures ranging from -195 to +150 Cel was constructed. This apparatus employs a residual gas analyzer (RGA) quadrupole mass spectrometer in line with a series of standard gas leaks. Gas permeating through the test coupon travels along the same path as that from the standard leaks and is read on the digital RGA output. Permeation readings are correlated to standard leaks readings to give accurate permeation rates and permeation rate constants (Kp).
