The high temperature strength of metals is inadequate to meet the needs of modern gas turbines, which therefore require the use of air cooling in critically areas. Uncooled ceramic materials have been used experimentally in aircraft and automotive gas turbines. The needs of industrial turbines a regenerally less rigorous, and they could take advantage of available ceramic materials to increase efficiency and specific output. Properties of relevant materials are described briefly and prime applications identified. Plans for a possible government supported development project are being drafted.
