Two forms of accelerated weld-zone corrosion, weld metal and heat-affected zone attack, are potentially serious maintenance and safety problems in ice-tranisiting ships were bare hulls, unprotected by a coating or cathodic protection system, are in contact with moving sea water. The CANMET experimental program was undertaken to evaluate weld-zone corrosion in a Canadian context using two corrosion control strategies - materials parameters and metallizing. At CANMET, a 'tank test' facility, adapted from the Scandinavian approach for studying weld-zone corrosion, was developed as the cornerstone of the testing program. In addiiton, a short term (15 day) galvanostatic technique, called the anodic dissolution test, has been used. Data on weld-zone corrosion obtained using these tests are presented for a number of materials parameters such as combinations of steel plates, welding consumables and welding procedures. Metalling of weldments with aluminum and aluminum/aluminum oxide composites has also been investigated as a strategy for minimizing weld-zone corrosion.
