In order to clarify whether the corrosion of the steel for offshore platform joints in plain sea water and in case of localized corrosion having occurred would be controlled effectively with the conventional criteria of cathodic protection, in the meantime the danger of low stress brittle fracture could be avoided, the stress-strain curves, the Index of Embrittlement and the fracture morphology of the steel are investigated at different protection potentials respectively in plain sea water and in simulated pit anolyte. In this paper, the results are reported. Based on them, some technical suggestions are proposed by which the corrosion and the brittle fractue of the joint steel would be controlled.
