A review is first given of recent cases of fatigue failure in nuclear power plant structures in Japan. Service fatigue failures have been occasionally experienced in piping, pumps and valves, for which fatigue design seems to be not necessarily applied enough. Key factors, which contribute to a service fatigue failure, are: lack of knowledge about fatigue strength, lack of consideration on possible vibration of a structural element, and then lack of fusion or poor penetration in a welded joint. The last part of the paper deals with a short review of two problems on fatigue strength, which are under lively discussion in connection with the fatigue design of offshore structures.
