Applied Research in supersonic combustion is traced back to its beginning, now more than 35 yeas ago. To establish guidelines for focussing the effort, the principal potential applications of scramjets are examined. For these applications, typical flight corridors are defined to provide a basis for determining the initial conditions entering the combustion zone. From a list of the cogent research topics, several are selected for more detailed discusion. The study of precombustion shock trains and the modeling derived therefrom serves to frame the discussion of the entire flow in the scramjet. Results of flowfield calculations based on this modeling are compared with measurements made in supersonic combustors to establish the veracity of the procedures. Finally, suggested areas of research to resolve remaining important design issues are presented.
