Effective engineering support for railway vehicles in service is an essential element of British Rail's operation. Design modifications to improve safety or reliability, and re-design to adapt existing vehicles to meet new specifications must be undertaken quickly and efficiently. The existing CAD system had already proved valuable to engineer and draughtsmen responsible for engineering support and needed to be expanded and enhanced. This paper describes how British Rail addressed the'expand or replace' issue and highlights other factors considered in the selection, implementation and operation of additional CAE facilities and will be illustrated with examples of the work produced and the benefits achieved.
