There has been a continuous drive for improvement of transmission controls for making smooth shifts to reduce driver's fatigue, improve the equipment operation, and reduce the fuel consumption. In this paper the process of development of the transmission electronic control system by Bharat Earth Movers Ltd, has been desribed. The essential prerequisite for interfacing the electronic controls i.e., transmission electrohydraulic controls were developed. The feasibility and application requirements to introduce the transmission electronic controls on a front end loader were studied by field data-acqusition and analysis. The transmission gear shift strategy was drived from mathematical modelling of the power train. The electronic controller was developed and the control algorithm was coded in the assembly language. The system was evaluated in the laboratory under simulated conditions. The transmission control system is expected to achieve significant reduction in fuel consumption and cycle time.
