At GKSS a comprehensive underwater technology r & d-program is in operation, mainly conducted in the GUSI, the GKSS-Underwater-Simulator. A special subject in this activity is the development of advanced robots, applicable for hyperbaric dry and wet environments in order to automate subsea work such as jet cutting. For this application a DIA-jet cutting station was built up, which allows the reserch of cutting processes, performed by a robot down to simulated water depths of 2200 m. Cutting tests with dry abrasive supply and first piercing experiments with a DIA-jet technique were performed down to a simulated water depth of 600 m. Test results are presented, which indicate a significant change in cutting efficiency under simulated underwater conditions.
