This paper describes the role of interface contact resistance in the calculation of heat flow and temperatures generated in brake friction pairs which comprise resin bonded composite friction materials and metallic mating surfaces. Finite Element analysis has been used to predict interface temperatures and heat flows and the results have been compared with experimental measurements made using fine thermocouples. Good agreement has been achieved, showing that the proportion of heat which flows into the friction material varies with time and temperature. The presence of a temperature 'jump' across the interface is confirmed.
