Internal combustion engine test benches, appropriately equipped with transducers, are necessary and sophisticated instrumentation to carry out tests and messurements on i.c. engines. Employing electrical machines instead of eddy current brakes to realize i.c. engine test benches allows one to apply the tested engine torques both for motoring and for braking. In this paper the characteristics of dynamic test bed for internal combustion engines are discussed reporting and analyzing two different control strategies. A simplified mathematical model of the system components is obtained in order to design structure and parameters of the regulators. The control techniques previously analyzed have been implemented on a prototype of about 100 kW. Experimental results are reported and compared.
