Car body manufacturing in automobile industry is very exacting concerning joining techniques and automation. In combination with a five-axes gantry machine the laser is a very flexible tool for cutting and welding of curved car body sheets. Deep-drawing cold rolled steel components are bordered, joint together and welded immediatly afterwards in a straight joint arrangement using a single clamping device for both operations (1, 2, 3). With the application of a filler wire feeding a sufficient weld reinforcement can be realized and, by means of a wire material with suitable metallurgical properties, the hardness increase can be reduced to a tolerable value. In order to achieve a high level of automation for finishing work a line of weld with a minimum of hardness increase, distortion and porosity is aspired. Realizing this technology new requirements for process control will arise, mainly if laser beam cutting and welding has to be done vertically, in overhead position or along curved lines of a small radius.
