For more than 15 years Opel has used precoated steel sheets in addition to special rust protection primers to fight corrosion in the critical areas of automobiles. Previously hot dip galvanized and electrogalvanized zinc was predominantly used for this. When the market offered new coating systems in the early 1980's, a rust protection study was initiated to improve the corrosion resistance of all models. This was accomplished by introducing more and better precoated steel sheets. This paper describes the decision finding process which led to the approval of an electrogalvanized zinc-nickel alloy coating and the different tests and rating of the performance characteristics. The main portion of this paper deals with the experience on the phosphatability and paintability of the 1- and 2-side precoated steel sheets. Coating difficulties and their probable causes will also be discussed.
