Much of the progress that has been made in diesel engine design has been possible because of the availability of higher quality lubricants that permit these engines to operate under severe conditions and achieve the advantages inherent to the diesel engine. The authors describe the contribution of marine lubricants towards keeping engine wear and maintenance down to an acceptable level in spite of increasing use of lower quality fuels. They also quote instances of abuse, where the lubricant is used as a substitute for operational or design modifications or simply as an after-thought. The authors contend that the latter practice detracts from cost-effective and efficient operation of ships and should be discouraged.
