The stresses set up in a pipe being laid from a lay barge over an articulated stringer are determined by the configuration the pipe takes up. The equations governing this configuration are derived and expressed in terms of tension in the pipe and displacement normal to the pipe as the basic paraemters. A computer program is developed for the analysis of two dimensional static pipeline problems. The pipe is modelled as an elastic, continuous beam that is supported by the pipe supports on the barge and stringer and the soil at the bottom. The length of the pipeline in the suspended portion will be an unknown to start with. The pipe configuration and stresses are calculated for the barge, stringer, freespan and at the bottom simultaneously using a single, consistant method to satisfy the boundary conditions. The resulting solution does not require the patching together of dissimilar solutions for the barge, stringer and free span. The equations are solved iteratively using finite difference techniques.
