Acquiring meaningful acoustic data from automotive components in a factory environment can be a difficult task due to background noise from test stand machinery, factory noise, and noise from other components. A signal processing scheme was developed which incorporates the least mean square (LMS) algorithm by Widrow for adaptively filtering out unwanted background noise. Tests were performed to evaluate the feasibility of adaptive noise filtering to enhance analyzing radiated noise from automotive air conditioning compressors, powder steering pumps, and engines. The results of the study demonstrated the utility of an adaptive filter to remove extraneous noise that masked the radiated noise from these components.
