An axle case of automobile is fabricated by welding two same parts, which are formed from sheet metal blanks. The upper edge surface of the formed parts must be straight and flat in order to obtain good welding quality. Meanwhile the shape of the parts are determined by the initial blank geometry. In this paper a methode is proposed in order to obtain the optimum blank geometry by using an elasto-plastic finite element method. Though the actual forming process is full 3-D deformation, the process is modeled by 2-D in-plane plane stress bending deformation.
