A significant need exists for future space structures which exhibit high stiffness, increased thermal conductivity, resistance to atomic oxygen in the low earth orbit environment, and a near-zero coefficient of thermal expansion. Tube structures which meet these needs have been developed and utilize inner and outer aluminum tubes into which graphite fiber is drawn, infiltrated with epoxy resin and cured. The work described herein is a demonstration of tailoring of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) by chemical etching of the aluminum inner and outer tubes after tube fabrication.
