Law enforcement agencies, as with the Department of Defense, are constantly seeking to improve the performance of their armor systems. This paper synopsises the results from one agency's in-house program to incorporate state-of-the-art armor to fulfill its missions. Performance requirements for an opaque armor system to defeat handgun threats were defined. Prototype panels of candidate designs incorporating Spectra composites were fabricated and tested. Test results led to armor design iterations. Work is continuing to enhance the ballistic performance of the armor at its perimeter.
