Glass-reinforced plastics (GRP) have found many applications in armor technology. However, the mechanisms by which GRP targets defeat projectiles are still obscure. Unlike metals, the properties of GRP composites can be extensively varied through controlled changes in process or components. Thus, there is a large potential payoff for understanding the penetration process of GRP-like mterials, since improved designs may result. Experimental techniques were developed to study the penetration of projectiles into glass-reinforced plastics (GRP). Elongated projectiles were used, together with a streak camera, a framing camera, and flash x-rays. This instrumentation provided continuous measurement of projectile deceleration, as well as data for target deflection and residual velocity. Projectiles were rigid conical, hemispherical, or blunt noise, striking at velocities up to 570 m/s. Experimental techniques and preliminary results are presented.
