One of the outstanding features of the abrasive waterjet is its ability to cut a wide diversity of materials well. An abrasive waterjet has been supporting prototype and production programs at the Georgia Division of Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company. Successful results have been routine when cutting metal-matrix composites, graphite/thermoplastic composites, and thin-walled stainless-steel ducting. A technique is presented for determining the effect of cutting speed on kerf width. Air quality measurements revealed that worker exposure levels were safe for all particulates (carbon, titanium dioxide, and total dust).
