The paper covers two major areas of use of machine vision technologies in aerospace manufacturing. The first is the use of high speed, multifunction, multiparameter sensors for robot guidance and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) metrology. Sensor operating technology is reviewed, and several applications are discussed in the area of object location error compensation. Such methods reduce or eliminate the need for precise component fixturing for manufacturing and assembly. The sensors also are applicable to CMMs to increase the speed of measuring. A second technology for vision inspection of surfaces for waviness is described, with application to composites and composite tooling. A new capability to objectively calculate severity of selected areas for quantification on a user-calibrated scale is reviewed. The technology provides nonsubjective inspection capability over large 3-D curved geometries.
