Electronically controlled engines offer the advantage that they can be controlled to the optimum operating conditions at all times because they allow an exceptionally fine degree of control. However, there are an extremely large number of control parameters that must be calibrated. Those related to the basic control factors of the ignition timing and airfuel ratio alone number around 1.000. Unless these control parameters can be maintained to their optimum values, the full advantages of electronic control cannot be obtained. This paper presents new methods for calibrating approximately 500 control parameters pertaining to the airfuel ratio and ignition timing. These two control factors are regarded as being common to virtually all types of engines under steady-state operation following engine warm-up. The new methods make it possible to determine the optimum parameter values with high levels of accuracy and speed. These methods make use of the following techniques: air-fuel ratio feedback control based on the use of a wide-range A/F sensor, ignition timing feedback control using a cylinder pressure sensor and high-speed learning control. With these new methods, each parameter can be determined in approximately 30 seconds on average for each individual operating condition,.
