As a subset of the area of Design for Manufacturability, Design for Assembly (DFA) and an approach to reducing product cost through improving 'assemolibility'. This paper investigates current DFA methodologies and presents the development of a methodology specifically for aerospace structures. A qualitative approach to DFA has been developed and implemented on a PC. The strategy of this approach is two-fold in that it is intended to teach design personnel the concepts of DFA while allowing them to improve on a developing design project. By informing the design personnel of the DFA principles, DFA will be applied to a design as early in the design process as possible, where its benefits are most pronounced. The system developed was applied to a test fuselage panel. The system pointed out several areas where assembilibility could be improved. Each of these areas were in accordance with known assembilibility problems, thus demonstrating the system's functionality.
