Distortion of plate during fabrication either as a result of cutting processes or welding can lead to high fabrication costs. Whilst it is common to allow in part for welding distortion, plate cutting effects can be more difficult to predict. Harland and Wolff plc and British Steel plc are co-operating in an experimental programme aimed at studying the cutting of 6-12 mm hull steels using the oxy-propane and underwater oxy-plasma processes. The work involves monitoring of the behaviour of commercially supplied plates during trial procedures intended to represent various aspects of typical ship plate cutting operations. The results to date indicate that the residual stresses associated with plate manufacture play only a minor role in the behaviour of plate during oxy-propane cutting, and that oxy-plasma cutting can make a major contribution to the control of distortion.
