The operation of conventional diesel engines of the compression ignition type on gaseous fuels is not new and some of the early attempts can be traced back to the beginning of this century. However, most of the early attempts have been unsuccessful mainly due to the problems that were encountered at both light load and near the full load regions. Currently, with the prospects of increased fuel costs and depletion of conventional petroleum fuels, interest in this topic has increased significantly and there is interest and activity in many parts of the world and particularly where there is an abundance of gaseous fuel supplies in comparison to diesel fuel. In a few years the availability of LPG in India is expected to surpass its demand as cooking fuel and as such may be used as an alternative fuel in diesel engines. Hydrogen is also receiving considerable attention as an alternative sources of energy to replace the rapidly depleting petroleum resources. This paper presents some of the investigations on the comparaitve study on the performance, fuel economy, combustion characteristics and smoke emissions when hydrogen and LPG are used are primarily fuels in a single cylinder, direct injection diesel engine on dual-fuel mode.
