The present source of fuels used in I.C. Engines viz, gasoline and diesel will deplete within another 40 years if consumed at an increasing rate estimated to be of the the order of 3 percent per annum. Alcohol which is a photosynthetic fuel has good property to be used as an alternative fuel. Out of various forms of alcohol, ethanol and methanol have good scope as fuel in I.C. engines. The experiments were planned to conduct the tests on ethanol mixed with diesel and methanol mixed with petrol. The review of literature reveals that alcohol which is used as chemical can also be used for power generation. Experiments were conducted on diesel engine and petrol engine each of 5 h.p. vertical, single cylinder, aircooled. It was found that the petrol engine can be operated upto 20 % methanol mixed with 80 % petrol and diesel engine upto 10 % ethanol mixed with 90 % diesel satisfactorily. However, there was drop in power output in each cases, the exhaust gas temperature, the sound level, fuel consumption etc. were measured and reported.
