An investigation has been carried out on both tandem and double tandem submerged arc welding processes as these potentially offer increased current density, welding speed and deposition rate over conventional single wire systems. Locally available microalloyed off-shore structural steels and also quenched and tempered alloy naval structural steels were the base materials. Commercially available filler materials were selected to suit these base plates. Features assessed included deposition rates, toughness of joints and macro/microstructures of the weld zone. With the high welding speeds used, very significant increases indeposition rates were achieved with corresponding reductions in joint completion times compared to conventional processes. In addition, improvements in weldment toughness and reductions in heat affected zone size were found. However, it became apparent that an optimum welding speed existed for a particular material to enhance weld quality.
