Rapid gear changes, made without the aid of clutch or synchromesh, are investigated on a Land Rover gearbox in which the selectors are moved hydraulic rams. Input and output torques and speeds and selector dog movement are measured for a wide range of operating conditions. Two types of engagement dogs are tested and found to have very different engagement mechanisms. Standard dogs rebound and need many attempts to engage but face dogs engage at the first attempt. After engagement the dog mismatch speed sets up damped torsional vibrations which may be calculated using simple methods.
