Statistical Energy Analysis Modelling is becoming more widely adopted in a number of acoustic fields for the analysis of structure borne noise paths. Following successful studies on helicopter cabin type structures, SEA is now being applied to the main gearbox, which is the main source of cabin noise for many helicopters. The ultimate aims of such an exercise are twofold - to develop a helicopter noise prediction model and to provide the gearbox designer with suitable design tools. The programme in its original concept envisaged building a structure, not too dissimilar to a main gearbox casing but with weakly coupled substructures, and progressively modifying it until it became a strongly coupled structure. An SEA model could then be developed at each stage and varied by experiment to finally produce a model which would generally exhibit the characteristics of a real gearbox.
